Approach

For lack of better description (and sorry for the jargon), TriplePoynt Analytic Server is an MSAS or SSAS or AAS clone, running under the Windows operating system, supporting Microsoft's industry standard OLAP protocol ODBO and accessed from Microsoft Excel using Microsoft's Pivot Table services (or other ODBO clients).

MSAS has a kryptonite...pre-aggregation or use of physical data cubes.   To provide a reasonable level of performance, MSAS needs to extract, move, transformation and re-load data into an MSAS proprietary data structure or cube.  Microsoft (and other OLAP vendors) chose to use data cubes to overcome performance limitations of the databases available in the 1990s (yes, I said 1990s)!

Pre-aggregating data solved the performance problems while introducing complexity and cost, most concerning pre-aggregation introduced a crippling rigidity to data and therefore to the analysis. The predetermined physical structure of the cube controlled the analysis, not the data (a big claim)!

Why build a clone of a popular, successful, older Microsoft product?

Well, the marketplace didn't sit still and recently a new breed of parallel, cloud-based databases have emerged, including Snowflake.   These products offer incredible performance and scalability.   The rational for pre-aggregation and cubes is no longer supportable!  MSAS' kryptonite is exposed!

Download a FREE evaluation version of TriplePoynt for Snowflake right now!
